For the past four weeks I have suffered with terrible pain that is sometimes crippling running from the right side of my upper abdomen. This pain is like nothing I have ever suffered from before, it comes on fast and hard, I cannot get comfortable or sleep at all during an episode, it can last anything from an hour to six or seven hours, I can sometimes be in tears as it is so painful, and it travels around my back between my shoulders too. Now this is not really a new thing I have had it a few times before now but it was a one off kind of thing so I thought it was just indigestion or something and nothing really and this is how I thought it would be four weeks ago this time though it had other plans.
I had the pain 5 out of 7 nights leaving me so tired and in pain I was getting quite depressed with it all by that point so I arranged to see my doctor. I got to see her pretty quickly and she had a feel around I explained all the symptoms I was getting and she gave me some Omeprazole and told me to take one every night before bed. She also prescribed me Buscopan and told me to take these IF I suffered pain and to give it a week if things were no better then I was to ring her and she would book me in to have an ultrasound on my upper abdomen as it sounded like it could be gall bladder related.
I gave it a week and rung her last Monday to let her know I was still getting pain and neither of the tablets were helping. I received a call the very next day to book my appointment for the ultrasound for the 13th of this month.
The pain is still here, on and off, I get around 2-3 good nights vs 4-5 bad nights but it is happening in the day time too now. I will be glad once they have scanned me although I am worried that it may be something more sinister than gall stones.
I am fed up with not being able to function as normal at the moment. I am rarely ill and hate not being able to do what I would do normally because of pain.
I will write another post when I have had the ultrasound and know what the results are.

It sounds exactly like gallstones.The pain is horrendous when the stones get caught in the bile duct…it disappears as fast as it comes on.The pain in your back and shoulder is referred pain.I sympathise with you….it’s horrid.I had my gallbladder removed in 2001 and I’ve been problem free since then.Towards the end I was having attacks every week with the stones getting stuck for 4-5 days at a time.I was off my head on tramadol,pethidine,buscopan,diazepam…..nothing took the pain away.Get that scan brought forward and your appointment made for removal.They could not do keyhole on me as the liver was stuck to the pancreas but most of the time they can.Recovery s v quick with keyhole.Good luck.Keep us updated x
