Whether it’s a lounge or a living room, you need a place in your home for your entire family to relax and enjoy themselves. It can be a focal point for entertaining guests or just a chill-out space for any member of the family to retreat to, but there are a few must-haves that’ll help you create a purpose-built relaxation zone.
Make an entertainment centre
Most lounge areas need a good entertainment suite. This can be a DIY project for yourself, where you can wall-mount your TV and then install games consoles in slide-out drawers, or you can just purchase a large cabinet to house consoles, DVD players and the TV.
New media devices such as the Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV stick can give your TV access to digital streaming at a low-cost – so you don’t always need to shell out on fancy gadgetry to get apps like Netflix.
Comfortable seating
One of the most important parts of any room is the seating. Your living room should be no exception. Think comfortable couches and additional seating as appropriate. Don’t just grab a leather sofa and think you’ve cracked it – as the design of some homes will make the leather seem cold or out of place. Make sure your sofa matches the theme of the room and suits the people who sit in it. Softer sofas may not be very good for people with back problems.
You can also invest in additional seating to create a cosy area for the kids. Throw some bean bag chairs together around a games console to provide a great mini games centre in the back of the room.
Surface areas
You’ll need a good surface in your lounge to stand drinks and meals on without ruining the floor. A simple wooden coffee table will work here, but choose one without a glass top if you’re leaving children unsupervised.
Storage
When you’ve got any room dedicated to activities and chilling out, you’ll most likely accumulate toys and gadgets that need stored away to keep the room tidy in between use. Some simple plastic storage boxes can be tucked away behind the bean bag chairs, out of sight and handy for keeping the room de-cluttered.
Extras
Depending who the room is most used by, you can invest in some house plants or lava lamps and mood lighting to create the exact atmosphere you or your children want from a lounge. To further customise the room, hang paintings or prints that make you smile. You can even get your own pictures printed out in high resolution to be hung on walls for a truly personalised lounge.
