As you probably already know Zander likes BRIO toys, so when we were offered to review the Play & Learn Caterpillar which is a musical caterpillar I just had to accept.
Inside the box is a green base which has 9 grooves in it plus a caterpillar head and tail on opposite corners, this requires 2 AAA batteries which are not included. There are 4 wooden pieces with a yellow musical note on the top and a leaflet which illustrates the 10 different melodies you play by placing the wooden pieces in different grooves.
Zander wanted it straight away, what child wouldn’t? So I put the batteries in and away he went. Exploring it, not realising it even played melodies at that point.
The base is bright green and each groove has a red circle in from large to small, every time you place a wooden piece into a groove it plays one note and the tail and head of the caterpillar lights up. When you connect all four of the wooden pieces that connect from tail to head it plays a full melody with the caterpillars head and tail flashing.
The melodies played are; Row, Row, Row Your Boat, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, London Bridge, Frere Jacques, Jingle Bells, The Wheels on the Bus, Hush Little Baby, Incy Wincy Spider, Old MacDonald and two others I am not sure what they are.
It is great quality and durable which is everything you expect from BRIO toys, the base has rounded corners so no sharp edges, it is solid and quite weighty so it’s not going to get broken. All the electrical parts for it making melodies are covered and sealed with screws so there is no chance a child could get at them. The caterpillars head and tail are secure and will not come out even with a good tug at them.
The wooden pieces are a good size so no risk of a choking hazard and solid wood with a metal circle on the bottom which connects to the grooves to make the melodies.
This toy is perfect for developing your toddlers’ senses and understanding of cause and effect. It is so colourful which I have found children love brightly coloured toys.
The BRIO Play & Learn Caterpillar is suitable for 24 months and over. To find out more about this toy and other toys in the BRIO range and where to purchase them visit their website.
