In modern times, the dining room is slowly fading away. Old houses were all built with dedicated dining rooms, but new ones seem to employ open-plan living – or just have dining areas in the kitchen. If I could, I’d campaign to bring the dining room back! I know they still exist, but my feeling is that this room is more important than you think. Why? Let me explain…
It brings the family together
I know what you’re thinking, surely eating as a family is what brings everyone together? So, it shouldn’t matter if you have a dining room or a table in the kitchen. However, open-plan dining brings more distractions to the table. You may have a living room TV to watch, or there’s the noise of the kitchen fan. With a dining room, you’re all together in a quiet place, eating dinner. There are no distractions, and it’s a chance to really feel like a family. You can talk about your day, share stories, and so on. I also find that, when you don’t have a dining room, people are more likely to eat anywhere. They may take food into the living room, their bedroom, etc. But, with a dedicated space to dine, the temptation isn’t there, and the whole family sits together as one.
It can improve the design of your home
Dining rooms are also excellent from an interior design perspective. They offer more space, allowing you to provide more storage for plates, cups, etc. This frees up space in your kitchen! In fact, I would say that adding a dining room to your house is one of the best home improvements you can make.

Finally, a dining room can boost the value of your property. Think back to my initial point in the introduction. I said that most homes don’t have dedicated dining rooms these days. So, if one does, then it’s instantly more valuable. Lots of families want a dining room; it’s just that modern interior design trends are moving away from it. Even if you don’t plan on selling your home soon, it helps to add value to it whenever you can. There may be a day where you – or your children – sell this house, so you want it to be as valuable as possible.
Call me soppy, but I’m a sucker for a traditional dining room. I know it might sound a bit weird, but I genuinely feel like this is one of the best rooms a house can have. It’s a place where the family can come together and eat in peace. It’s a beautiful area that can have gorgeous furniture and accessories. The fact that it can improve the value of your home is also a lovely bonus!
