Online shopping is one of the most convenient ways to shop. In fact, most people will skip heading to the shops unless it is essential (and most of the time, the exclusive items are online). One of the greatest things about online shopping is that you can do it any time of the day or night, from your bed, in the car while parked waiting for the kids to get out of school and more.
And even though it is traditionally much cheaper, you can still save (or make) money on your online shopping.

Leave
One of the quickest ways to get a discount on what you really want is to make sure you have an account with a brand website, fill your basket and then leave. Within 10 hours, this triggers a discount code that will get sent to your emails. This smart trick doesn’t just get you a discount, but it also stops you making any impulse purchases too. Most brands put a lot of money into closing a sale, so leaving the cart empty will give them an ‘abandoned cart’. Their ‘abandoned cart’ remarketing will kick in.
Dynamic Pricing
Online shopping has given a lot of power and analytics to the brands that we buy from. You can take power back by learning how to ditch dynamic pricing.
Have you ever looked at a hotel and seen it for £870 and then gone back the day after to see it is £900? That is dynamic pricing in play. The technique is getting more sophisticated as time goes on. But if you want to avoid triggering this issue, then follow these tips:
- Log out of your online social media accounts – so you won’t be targeted with these adverts
- Use incognito mode, or anonymous browsing
- Clear your browsing history and cookies
- If you get the option to choose a less economically developed country as your ‘homepage’ then do so – they use this to pitch the correct price point. So it may appear lower in many cases.
Vouchers and Codes
There are a few websites where you can get special codes. They may give free shipping, 10-50% off or notify you of sales. And you can find some high-quality offers on there for more prominent brands too. For example, you can nab a Mint Velvet discount code and snag a discount on some new clothes.
Email Address
Not all stores track delivery addresses, some only trigger duplicate accounts on email addresses. Which means that if you want to take advantage of first purchase bargains like 20% off + free shipping then set up multiple email addresses. Check the T&Cs before splitting orders – or you can use a friend or family address if they let you.
Depending on what you buy, you should choose the day you shop carefully. Flights can be cheaper midweek, but most people shop for flights on a Sunday. And when in doubt, wait 30 days before buying that thing you have to have. You might find by the time day 30 comes you are over the hype.
