In order to live a full and happy life, we need to have a little confidence in us. Confidence is an absolutely vital part of our existence, and, without it, we won’t ever reach our full potential – that’s a fact. We can, of course, live pretty happy lives and be content with many things while harbouring low self-esteem, but the ability to back ourselves would ensure the most is made of our days. Think about it: would you rather sit in your home quietly for years, or get out and explore the world? The latter, right? You’d need quite a bit of self-belief and confidence in order to go through with something like that.
The idea of having self-belief is being stressed here because that’s the kind of happiness and joy you’ll want your children to possess, isn’t it? As a parent, there’s little worse than seeing your kid retreat into his or her shell. You really don’t want them to struggle through life. That’s why it’s up to you to ensure they’re built into a strong, capable and confident human being, ready to take on the world.
Fortunately, the human mind can be trained into becoming more confident in itself. It’s not something we’re born with – we can build it up like a muscle. This means that, if you do the right things around your kid(s), then you’re going to give them the best possible chance in life. If you’re wondering how you can boost the self-esteem and self-belief of your children, then here are just a few ideas for you:
Be Positive And Happy Around Them
Even when they’re really, really young, you’re going to want to make sure you see the positives in everything. There’s a time and a place to be realistic and slightly pessimistic, but you’re going to want to be a happy optimist around them for the most part. They’ll mimic you and bounce off you regarding absolutely every aspect of life, so make sure they see the good things. Kids that grow up in miserable, negative environments often grow up to be just that – and that’s not great for their overall outlook on life, let alone the way they’ll eventually view themselves.
Go Out And Do Things With Them
Actually experiencing life will make people more competent in doing so again. When a person sits indoors all day and spends their time hardly moving, they suddenly forget how to do these things. Having theoretical knowledge in most areas simply will not suffice – you need to have practical knowledge, too. This applies to even the most basic aspects of life, like attending parties and doing a food shop. It sounds crazy that there are people that are scared of entering a supermarket, but they ARE out there. Be sure to get out and do things with your kids.
Encourage Them To Be Who They Are
A lot of parents like to live vicariously through their children. It’s a strange way to behave, but it’s common. They feel as though they missed out on a few things, so they’d like their kids to experience what they didn’t. They’ll then try to force certain ideas and hobbies onto them, which is only going to make them confused – and even a little resentful in the future.
Whatever they like; you like. If they want to dress a certain way, then that’s their opinion. You’ll guide them in terms of what’s acceptable, as they still need to abide by the law! After that, however, they should be free to do what they want, and you need to support them. They decided if they like Vans, Nike, or Adidas. They decide how they feel about certain aspects of life. They choose their own hobbies.
Don’t Give Them Social Media Straight Away!
We’ve mentioned that you must support what they want, but there are some things that need to be kept from them until they’re of a mature and responsible age. Social media is one of those things. While it’s a great little set of platforms, it is also full of issues such as cyberbullying, brainwashing, and inflated standards. It can really bring a person down if they’re not in the right place mentally.
Raise Them To Be Kind To Others
When you’re good to another, it makes you feel better about yourself, right? Let your children be that way inclined, too. Not only will they feel the mirror effect of happiness a lot more, but they’ll also get some practice in when it comes to being sociable. A healthy social life breeds confidence in this world.
Teach Them How To Cook!
Cooking is a fundamental life skill that we should all possess. If we’re not able to cook, then we’re not going to be able to live a proper and healthy life. Cooking is not only essential, but it’s also a confidence-boosting ability. When you know that you’re good at such an important skill, it makes you feel good about yourself. It’s also an attractive trait, so you’ll have others admiring you! Make sure this is something you allow your kids to possess.
Take A Genuine Interest In What They Have To Say
When you’ve had a tough day, and all you want to do is rest, the last thing you want to do is listen to other people and their problems. Get used to it, though, because it’s such an important thing. Taking notice and being there for your kids will make them feel so much better about being open. They’ll feel as though they can trust you – and this kind of trust will make them feel a lot more confident in what they say and do going forward.
Don’t Project Your Worries Onto Them!
This is similar to the idea of living vicariously through your children in that you’re trying to make them think like you – in a strange kind of way. It’s easy to do; we have all projected certain feelings and ideas onto others at some point in our lives. It’s a case of catching yourself doing it, though. When you’re worried about something, be sure to think before you speak. Many parents turn their kids into nervous wrecks because of what they’ve spent years telling them.
Make Sure They Have Enough Energy Every Day
You’re obviously going to feed your kids every day (at least I hope so), but what are you going to feed them? Make sure they have a balanced diet that provides them with all the energy they need. It’s not just their bodies that need food – their brains also need to be fulfilled. If they aren’t, then overthinking and worrying can come into play.
Give Them The Best Upbringing You Can
This absolutely goes without saying, but you should do all you can to really put a smile on their faces every single day. Work hard when you’re in your job, and work hard around the house. You made the commitment to start a family, so you need to put a few extra shifts in. We’re not saying you should be a millionaire with an amazing home, but there should be some pretty good standards in your own mind.
Teach Them The Value Of Money Early On
This is pretty boring to grown-ups, so it’ll probably be even more boring for your children. It’s not something you have to really stress and reiterate, but let it be known to them that money is scarce and an important aspect of life. Of course, this talk should happen when they’re comprehensive enough – not when they’re super young! Knowing about money will make them feel a lot more assured as they grow.
Encourage Exercise
Don’t apply too much pressure on them to work out, but let them know that exercising will make them feel better about themselves in many ways. They’ll get all the good chemicals from their brain, and they’ll be more adept physically – which is always a handy trait when someone’s looking to have more belief in him or herself.
Make Them Work Around The House!
Chores around the house need to be done. They’re boring, but, just like cooking, these jobs will make a person a lot more competent. Knowing how to do things domestically – especially at a young age – will make them feel more confident about living and looking after themselves. It’ll make them more confident in terms of going out and getting a real job, too, which will set them on their way in life.
Let Them Be Their Own Person
We touched on this slightly before, but you need to let your children be their own person – especially when they’re into their teens and above. Parents who baby their teenage and adult children who have flown the nest need to take a look at themselves! It’s embarrassing and stops progress! Just don’t do this. They’ll feel pretty ashamed of themselves, and they probably won’t have learned how to do most things because you’ve always done everything for them.
