Did you know children need at least 2 hours of outdoor play daily? And with the summer months fast approaching, creating an outdoor play area for your kids is a great way to give them their daily dose of outdoor time. It’s also an excellent and healthy way to keep them away from the TV, video games, and the indoor environment for a while. You want your child to enjoy hours of fun, and be more active and adventurous. So, whether you have a large backyard or a small balcony, here are four tips for creating an outdoor play area for your kids.
1. Create a relaxing spot to monitor your kids
The last thing you want to do is leave your kids unattended when they play outside. So, while you’re creating a place primarily for your kids, add a spot where a parent or adult supervisor can also relax while keeping their eyes on the children. It shouldn’t be too much. Something as simple as a table with comfortable chairs and a shade should be more than enough. But if you have enough outdoor space, you can add an outdoor kitchen or create a place to cook while keeping your eyes on your kids.
2. Provide safety features
Anything is possible when kids are playing outside, as they’re open to threats from multiple places. So, provide all the safety measures needed for a safe space. For example, a fence should keep toddlers from wandering off or unwelcome animals from getting in. Also, look out for tripping hazards like exposed tree stumps, rocks, and concrete footings. Plus, pools in or around the play area should be covered when not in use. An adult should also be available at all times to supervise the kids.
3. Incorporate nature
An outdoor play area for kids is supposed to get your little ones away from their tech devices and spend more time in nature. Several studies have shown the immense benefits of nature in improving a child’s psychological and physical well-being. So be sure to add as many natural elements as possible when creating an outdoor play area for your kids. For example, you can create sand pools or boxes, grow plants or trees, add a tiny pool, etc. Also, ensure the outdoor space offers a fresh breeze and enough sunlight. And speaking of sunlight, the next point is also important.
4. Provide some shade
You can expect the sun to be high during the summer months. And while your kids need to get some sunlight, you must protect them from the harmful UV rays when they play outside. So, ensure that the play area comes with a source of shade. That could be in the form of a tree or an artificially constructed shade like a roof or canopy. You can also consider investing in a sun awning to provide a safe and well-ventilated area where your kids can retreat when the sun gets too hot. You can find awnings in various designs and sizes, depending on your needs or the design of your home.
