While the kitchen is said to be the heart of the household, many families spend the majority of their time in the living room. The sofa is the most important piece of furniture in any lounge, and with so many options, from chesterfields to corner sofas and everything in between, it can be hard to decide which one is right for you. We will show you how to spend your money wisely and find the ideal sofa for your living room.

Measure up
So many people purchase a sofa without measuring up, and are surprised when it turns up and doesn’t fit, or looks wrong because of proportions. Consider how much room you want your sofa to take up in your living room. It depends on whether you have other sofas or chairs in the room, as well as other furniture to work around. You also need to think about the number of people who will be staying in your house. On a family movie night, will you all sit together and watch a movie? Make sure that you find out how to measure for a sofa correctly before ordering.
Think about the materials
If you have young children or pets, while as beautiful as it might be, a pale pink suede sofa may not be ideal. There is a huge range of materials available – leather, crushed velvet, upholstery and so on. Leather cleans up is always a good choice – warm in the winter, cool in the summer, clean up easily and lasts well. Think about your lifestyle and which material will not only look good but be practical too.
What colour do you want?
If you have a neutral colour scheme, you can risk opting for something with big and bold patterns or in bright colours, but be aware – that bright purple sofa might look great now with those white walls, but if you want to change your decor, you may have to buy a new couch. Purchasing one in neutral colours – greys, tans, browns, creams and black – mean it will go with whatever colour scheme or decor you have and give it a longer life.
Squishy and soft or firm and supportive?
Some people want to be able to sink into a soft sofa at the end of the day, while others would rather something a little more firm and supportive. For that reason, it is a good idea to try out a sofa before you buy it, to make sure it is comfortable for you and your family. You do not want anything too high, but you also do not want it so low that you struggle to get up from it. Consider whether you want removable back cushions – which are usually softer and can be adjusted to your needs more – or fixed backs, which are generally firmer and give more support.
A sofa is always going to be a pretty big investment. They are not cheap, and they are something that should last for a few years if you choose the right one.
