We were asked if we would like to try smorging with Castello and my first question was, what is smorging? and once I was told I knew that my husband would like to try this.
Smorging is based on the Scandinavian smorgasbord and is a relaxed grazing style of eating which allows you to enjoy your favourite cheese with a combination of different tastes and textures.
In fact it is a really simple idea, raid the fridge or cupboard for left overs, meats, crackers, pickles and the likes.

We were sent a small selection of sample sized Castello cheeses in a presentation box, some crackers and salami. The samples of cheese were Castello Creamy White, Castello Pineapple Halo and Danish Blue.

As it was the summer holidays when we did this, we did not have any left overs, I mean who has left overs in their fridge when they have children at home for six weeks.
We received a how to smorg guide too which helped a lot. which included tips like find salty, sweet and savoury tastes along with different textures and between crunchy and soft.

My husband decided to have the three cheeses in one sitting as they were small portions and laid out some salami and crackers on the plate too, this was in his words ‘a perfect supper’.
He really liked all of the cheeses, his favourite was the pineapple halo, he liked the taste and the texture of this one. It was a cream cheese with pineapple chunks, almonds and papaya.
It was a fun experiment and we will definitely be trying it with other cheeses in the future.
We were also sent some recipes to try when smorging, our favourite out of them was the Castello Pineapple Halo with Strawberry salsa.
Here is the recipe in case you want to try smorging.
Ingredients (serves 4-6)
Castello Pineapple Halo
200g strawberries
2-3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper
Lemon thyme (for decoration)
Crisp bread
Method
- Cut the strawberries into quarters and place in bowl.
- Just before serving, mix with pepper, balsamic vinegar, decorate with lemon thyme, and serve.
It really is as simple as that.
