We all need to give ourselves a pat on the back for getting through the last 12 months. As the UK enters another lockdown self-care for parents, carers and children are very important. Below are just some self-care tips for you and your children to help you through the current lockdown and beyond
Personal Time
Spending more time indoors and with family members can mean that tempers fray. It’s important to take personal time for everyone involved. This means allowing your child to do their own thing at certain times during the day. It also means giving yourself a break from the routine too. Do something that you enjoy, go for a walk, listen to music, have a bath. Something to help you relax and unwind. Creating this space for each member of your family will help you all get through this challenging time.
Exercise & Eating Healthy
With Christmas just passed and the cold weather biting, it is easy to opt for unhealthy foods. These can make you feel lethargic so instead ensure you choose healthy foods and make food for the family that will also be healthy such as soups and stews. It’s not about losing weight it’s about giving your body the nutrients to keep it going in these difficult circumstances. Exercise is also good for your mental health. Exercise together as a family by going for a walk or joining in with Joe Wicks on YouTube again.
Be realistic
There is no such thing as perfect. Also, homeschooling is difficult so be realistic in what you can achieve during these weeks. Don’t expect to get everything done. Be compassionate with yourself and the rest of your family too.
Needs
If you find you do need items that you didn’t manage to purchase before lockdown, shopping online is the way to go. There are so many companies that have moved online from getting your groceries delivered from the big supermarkets to needing a cot from companies such as For Your Little One, there is so much choice now that you don’t need to worry, you can get what you need to be delivered quickly. So don’t be stressing if you do need something
Establish boundaries
Setting and establishing boundaries is a good way of ensuring there is routine to your day. Set time aside for family, for yourself but also set out when you and your children will be working. When that time is over, forget about homeschooling and work and concentrate on yourself and your family. These boundaries will allow you to switch off from what you still need to do.
Do Things You Enjoy
Reconnect with the things you enjoy as a family and for yourself. This can be anything from reading a book, phoning a friend, taking a bath, or watching a funny programme. Whatever is right for you do that. Ensure each family member also does it so they each take responsibility for their mental health and wellbeing.
Finally, remember to be kind to yourself and others. Everyone is experiencing heightened tension and stress at the moment. Ensure you prioritize your needs and that of your family and take comfort that you are looking after yourself and your family.
