I truly am a complete menstrual cup convert I have not bought disposable sanitary protection for months now, but with becoming a cup convert means I see a cup I do not have and want it so I tend to buy it.
When I was searching the MeLuna website I was surprised at how many sizes, styles and colours of menstrual cups are available.
There are 6 different sizes, XL, L, M, S, Mini M and Mini S and the website has a size guide with the actual measurements and maximum capacity so you can find one that will suit you. There is also a choice of firmness which are Classic, Soft and Sport, full details about each of these can be found here.
Once you have decided on the size and firmness you would like you can then choose what Grip Version would best suit you and you have a choice out of Ball, Ring, Stem and Basic. There are also 13, yes I said 13 different colours to choose from. Please note though that some colours are only available for certain firmness of the cups.
After having a good look and deciding what size, firmness, grip version and colour I wanted I ordered a large classic Meluna cup mainly because I am over 30, had vaginal births and other cups I have had are large too. I decided to have a purple one with a ball grip.
Meluna is based in Germany and I was shocked at how quickly it arrived to the UK, it was just a few days from ordering.
I did have to wait an extra 2 weeks to finally be able to use it though. But while I waited I checked out the information leaflet, the size guide and the size finder.
Finally it was time to use it so I quickly went about sterilising it by boiling it for about 3 minutes.
Using the fold of choice for me which is the punch down fold I found it very easy to insert and it opened properly on the first go. I did make sure of this by following the rim with my finger while inserted else if it is not open properly it will leak.
I have noticed since using cups that I am not as heavy as I thought I was prior to using them. This is good however because when a cup is properly inserted I do not feel it, I do forget it is there and after about 12 hours shriek Oh my god I forgot to empty it. Luckily I have had no overflow incidents as yet.
The MeLuna is really comfortable and really easy to insert and remove. I prefer the ball grip rather than a stem as I can grip it better with the ball. There are also four ridges at the bottom of the MeLuna cup which also helps if you are struggling, I have not struggled with it though.
I do prefer a firmer cup and this is quite firm which I think makes it easier for it to open up as softer cups are sometimes (in my experience) a bit stubborn when it comes to opening.
I used my new Meluna cup for my entire cycle and I can honestly say it is comfortable, I forget it is even there, I carried on as normal and didn’t’ have to dash to the bathroom at sometimes inappropriate moments because I thought I may have leaked and like I said I wore it for 12 hours without emptying and it was fine. I do trust this cup to do what it is supposed to do and feel confident with it.
I worked out by purchasing a MeLuna priced at 15€ or around £12 I would save almost £60. Which is what I would spend purchasing tampons in a year, that is not including disposable pads that I also used to purchase and I also deducted from the cost the price of the Meluna menstrual cup. So in 10 years I could save up to £720. Which did astound me.
