As we age, our hair tends to thin out, which I think most women would agree is not really a good thing.
When it comes to losing hair as we age, most of us will think about men going bald and frantically Googling what is the cost of a hair transplant, creating a combover or embracing it and shaving their heads, but sadly, women experience hair loss, usually in the form of thinning, as they get older too.
The good news is, if you’re a woman who’s worried about thinning hair, there are a number of things you can do to keep your hair as thick as possible for as long as possible.
1. Fake it with a thickener
Although you should take the majority of adverts telling you their product can permanently thicken your hair with a pinch of salt, there are some volumizing shampoos that will at least increase the appearance of your hair and give it a temporary thickening boost while you’re using, so find one that works for you and fake it ‘til you make it.
2. Treat your hair more gently
If you want to hold on to as many precious strands of hair as possible as you get solder – we naturally lose up to 100 per day normally – then you need to treat your hair more gently and maybe give up a few of the harsh practices you have been subjecting it to such as daily blow-drying or straightening, or monthly hair dyeing, All of these things are really harsh on the hair and will pull out strands like nothing else, so you may need to find a newer, gentler way of doing your hair instead, and if you do need to heat, use heat-protector sprays always.
3. Keep the moisture in
Your hair is always going to look bigger and smoother when it is more moisturized. When you add moisture, it won’t break so often and you will have a thicker, fuller head of hair for sure. That’s why you should start using leave-in conditioners, hair masks, oil treatments and whatever else you can find to retain moisture in your locks.
4. Take supplements
Hair, skin and nail supplements that contain collagen, biotin and silica are particularly good at helping you maintain a strong, healthy, full head of hair from the inside out, so be sure to supplement your diet with them, and on the subject of diet, eating as healthy as possible, and getting as many nutrients as possible, will surely help.
5. Seek medical help
If your hair is thinning, you could be suffering from an iron deficiency, thyroid problem or some other illness, which means it may not be age-related at all, and if you have any concerns at all, you should see your doctor ASAP to rule out any potential problems that could be impacting your hair, and have wider implications for your health.
Good hair can be tricky to maintain, especially as you get older, but it is possible!
