Working from home has become a constant feature in the lives of many Americans. Additionally, 55% of US workers believe remote work is feasible in their line of work. Although it has always existed, remote work gained popularity in the second quarter of 2020. And there is an even greater demand to be productive and to exceed expectations. In support of that, here is a compilation of ways to build a successful career when working from home.
1. Never stop learning
The world is rapidly developing, and there is no denying its tremendous influence on work and learning. Working from home in itself is evidence of the transformation taking place worldwide. In line with this, it would be wise to take every opportunity to upgrade yourself. Learning opens up a world of information beneficial to your line of work and career. And you will benefit from signing up for certification programs and courses.
If you are interested in upgrading yourself while working from home, there are two options to weigh. First, would you want to sign up for a course that aligns with your current profession? Secondly, would you take the bull by the horns and study something completely different from your line of work? For instance, taking a yoga course online can fetch you additional income if you are a remote executive assistant. You can become a master of this fitness course and, in turn, teach others online or in person for a fee. The objective is to learn whatever interests you, upgrade yourself, and make additional income.
2. Become your own advocate
This involves making others see and experience your worth, and it is similar to advertising or marketing. Your successes and achievements can only be known when you make it a point to be your advocate. This is especially useful if you are self-employed and working from home. For example, acting as your own advocate could translate into more gigs or contracts for you if you are a freelancer.
The expectations may be slightly different if you are a work-from-home employee of an established company. In that case, your employer may recognize your productivity and reward you accordingly. You must keep a structured record of positive feedback from your employer. That can be your reference point when it’s time to ask for an upward salary adjustment. This strategy may also be useful if you have a day job and are freelancing (from home) simultaneously.
3. Show enthusiasm for new challenges
Do you cower under pressure or feel constantly overwhelmed with new challenges that come your way as a work-from-home individual? While it is a normal human reaction to feel overwhelmed sometimes, it may not augur too well when you entertain this emotion for too long. The enthusiasm you show for new challenges can become a motivating tool to do better. It is tempting to avoid new challenges because they often present as difficult tasks. However, after weighing the pros and cons, you may realize that a challenge is a disguised opportunity.
