Granny Squares Almost Perfected

If you read my blog regularly you will notice that I knitted a bag a few weeks ago and my next project was to make Granny Squares which I assume are the easiest thing to make, if you are someone that crochets.

I have tried crocheting once or twice and failed miserably so gave up but I have seen so many patterns that  I liked it gave me the oomph as it were to try again. After my post about the bag  Black Sheep Wools contacted me and offered to help me by offering a book called Granny Squares by Susan Pinner to review and they also threw in 9 balls of SMC Select Extra Soft Merino yarn to get me started.

I think I know why I had issues previously with crocheting, I cannot do it with my right hand, I find it really awkward even though I am right handed as most directions tell you as a right handed person.

The Granny Squares book is fantastic, although I have only attempted the basic 4 row Granny Square I now know how to make it so I can just make a super huge Granny Square. But also there are other styles of Granny Squares that I can attempt too and the patterns for the Granny Squares teach you how to make bags, blankets, cushion covers and so much more.

The instructions on each pattern are so easy to follow. It teaches you basic crochet techniques including what each stitch is called and how to do them. There is problem solving which as a beginner is very helpful , there are also ‘granny’s tips’ that again are very helpful. Abbreviations are also explains as is the conversions.

Granny Squares is certainly a brilliant book especially for beginners and I know that I will be going back to it again and again to make other things. I particularly want to try the hexagon blanket as my daughter has asked me to make it for her. So next on the list will be to master the hexagon granny square.

I loved the wool I was given for this it is really soft. I did not like my crochet hook though. I had bought a cheap set of hooks and the wool  didn’t glide across it as I would have liked so I invested in a soft grip handle KnitPro hook and wow what a different. It may be a little more expensive but it is  much more comfortable to hold and the wool glides like a dream.

Without further ado I will show you what I have made so far. Ok so they are not perfect, I need to get the tension right but I am getting there.

This was my first attempt at a Granny Square. It looks more like a flower and is not square, the reason for this was because I didn’t read the instructions properly and just went into any hole I could see haha.

My second attempt was….A SQUARE!!!

Once this came together I carried on, I had piles of squares, so many that I wanted to get them sewn together fast.

So this is the start to our snuggly, when I say our I mean my youngest daughters and mine if she lets me near it when I have finished.

Again it isn’t perfect and it still needs lots more squares added but I am learning and it is just for us and being my first ever I am proud of myself.
