Discovery Channel 100x Microscope

My daughter loved her Discovery Channel Bug Barn and still uses it almost every week when she spots a new bug in the garden, she likes to get a closer look at things so I knew she was going to love the Discovery Channel 100x Microscope.

Inside the box is;

1 x Microscope
1 x Stirring Rod
1 x Tweezers
1 x Spare Bulb
3 x Prepared Slides (fern root, wool and oleaster)
8 x Blank Slides
2 x Vials
1 x Magnifying Glass
1 x Pipette
1 x Box containing;
8 x Slide Covers and Labels

Our first job was to find 2 AA batteries, the microscope needs these for the light and they are not included although is you have bright enough natural light the mirror will beam the light quite well.

The bottom cover slips off top reveal the battery compartment. You need a Philips screwdriver to undo this.

We were ready to go. My daughter wanted to look at the prepared slides first, we got all three ready and slid the first into the stage. At first my daughter could not see anything so I had a go myself, moved the slide a bit, changed the magnifying strength and turned the focus knob, all the while she was watching what I was doing so she could do it herself the next time.

Finally we had an in-focus image and my daughter quickly peered through the eye piece and all I heard was ‘Oh my god, Wow. This is awesome’.  We are looking at the Oleaster slide and I must say with the red colouring that was added to it, it did look quite awesome.

She then went on to look at a blue coloured fern root and then wool which got an eww reaction.

I told her that she could also look at different things that she can take from the garden and she reeled of a long list of can I do’s to which most were answered yes.

Since having the microscope my daughter seems to have caught the bug and is always inspecting things under it, grass, leaves, flowers, tree bark but also onions, carrots and really anything she can get her hands on.

I think this is a fantastic  educational product to get children interested in Science in a fun way.
