Autumn is a great season for all the family. There are plenty of colours and harvest festivals which make for a lovely atmosphere. The weather is still warm enough to brave the outdoors and you can get back in touch with nature. As long as you’ve got a pair of wellies and a warm coat, you can go out as a family for the day. Look for somewhere to pick pumpkins or conkers, and help out your local wildlife by putting up a bird feeder or hedgehog hotel. There are plenty of awesome activities you can try with your kids this autumn.
Welly walks
If you’re looking for great places to go walking near you then try downloading one of the free walking apps. These have safe routes marked out and you can find somewhere local. Go for a walk through the forest and simply have fun running through leaves or jumping in puddles. It’s gonna get colder soon so it’s a good time of year to get the last bit of fresh air. If you haven’t already, get the whole family kitted out with a decent pair of wellies. Waterproof jackets are a good idea as well just in case.
Gardening
Kids love gardening and there are still a few bits that will need doing during the cooler months. Take care of your plants and your lawn. There are also plenty of crops you can grow in the winter such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbages, kale, leeks, parsnips, and carrots. You can buy any necessary products you need online from The Grass People. Don’t neglect your garden during the autumn and winter and get your kids involved.
Hedgehog Hotel
One fun garden activity for the autumn is to make a hedgehog house. This is to give the local hedgehog population somewhere to hibernate. You can make a hedgehog hotel out of an old pallet or box, and use it as an excuse to teach your children a little more about wildlife.
Pumpkin carving
If your kids like Halloween the pumpkin carving is a fun project. Make your own jack-o-lanterns in preparation for trick or treaters. There might even be somewhere near you where you can pick your own pumpkins. This is also a very satisfying activity. If you’re not feeling creative, don’t worry, there are plenty of pumpkin carving ideas online.
Halloween party
Why not go all out and have a full-on Halloween party? You can design and make your own costumes as a family. Gather up some old clothes and materials and see what you can make from just repurposing old household items. You’ll be surprised what you can come up with if you’re creative enough. Get the kids to come up with their own ideas for costumes and decorations as well.
Fireworks night
There are plenty of awesome activities centred around fireworks night. You could try getting your own small fireworks or sparklers to light in your garden, safety first of course. If you have space you could have a bonfire too. For a slightly safer option, you could even have a go at this edible sparklers recipe. Make some fireworks night themed treats for all the family.
Family night in
If you’re all tired from having to get your home ready for winter, why not just have a family night in instead? You could have a cinema night. Put on a film for all the family and spend some quality time together at home. This is the best idea for rainy autumn evenings. You could also spend the evening on one of your DIY projects like carving pumpkins or making your Halloween costumes.
Bird feeder
A great way to get your kids interested in wildlife is by making a bird feeder. Birds need a little TLC in the winter as food can be more scarce. There are plenty of easy options if you want to make a DIY winter bird feeder. One of the simplest is a suet feeder. This is easy for the kids to do as well. All you need is to roll a ball of suet and birdseed together and hang it in a mesh bag, the type fresh fruit comes in.
There are plenty of ways you can still enjoy the outdoors as a family in Autumn. All you’ve got to do is wrap and go out looking for adventures. There’s a lot going on relating to harvest vegetables, wildlife, and other festivals, and it’s still warm enough to have fun outside.
