Going to the gym sucks.
Every second spent on the treadmill or cross-trainer feels like an eternity of hell. Not only that, but there’s also finding the time to get there between working and keeping a family alive and fed. Not to mention making sure you remember to pack everything in your gym bag without accidentally smuggling your kid’s cuddly toy in there.
Quite frankly, maintaining your fitness by going to the gym is just dull.
What if there was a way to work out that felt much less like work? Thankfully, back in the day, there were! Here’s a reminder of some of those fun ways to burn the calories- most of them you can get the kids involved with, too!
Splash Around at the Water Park
A day at the water park is a memory that most kids treasure. From keeping your head above water on the rapid river to running up the stairs over and over again towards the adrenaline rush of the dark and winding water slides. Burn calories and remember what it’s like to be a kid again. What’s not to love?
Bring the Competition Back into Competitive Sports
Who remembers playing football, rounders or basketball at school? What about running a relay? Sure, there’s no hiding that these activities are, indeed, sports when the very word can bring anxiety to the best of us, but by bringing an element of competition back into it, you get the fun, too.
Lose Inches and Gain a Whole New Wardrobe
A couple of laps walking around the shopping centre or high street can increase your step count way more than online shopping, that’s for sure. Not so good for saving the pennies from cancelling that gym membership, though. Get more steps in by walking there, taking the stairs, and parking further away from the entrance.
Revisit that 80’s Nostalgia- Go Roller Skating
A fun mode of transport and a cheap and easy way to have a fun work out. Yes, you can keep fit by roller skating. By doing this, you’re using different muscles to help you move along, as well as strengthening your core by trying to keep upright (as well as getting back up from the ground…if at first, you don’t succeed!). If four wheels under each foot is not for you, why not try a scooter? Thanks to companies like Uber cottoning on to the fact that they are an easy and fun travel solution, scooting doesn’t have to be left to the kids. As always, though- safety first. Make sure to invest in a good crash helmet and kneepads.
Dance the Night Away

What better way to break out a gentle sweat and increase your heartbeat than dancing? Create a playlist of your favourite toe-tapping tunes and move to the beat. Maybe even enrol on to an evening dance class to improve your skills. Either way, the music should make you not want to resist dancing along.
What are your favourite ways of burning calories?
