Frizzy hair is a sight to behold and can be the bane of many women. While most women are blessed with great hair, there are some that are just unlucky to have frizzy hair and contrary to popular belief it isn’t only the curly-haired that suffer from frizz, although 65% of women do actually have curly hair.
Some people do actually enjoy frizzy hair and while there is nothing wrong with it if that’s what you want, most women would prefer to be free from the frizz. Unfortunately, there is no one cure solution and proper management of your hair dictates how it turns out, which can be quite a job but there are some things you can do that will go a long way to getting the look you want, and these include:
- Managing moisture
- Cutting regularly
- Controlling the temp
Dryness is the main cause of frizzy hair while dead ends will contribute more to frizzy-looking hair and heat should be used sparingly if you are to control the look for naturally frizzy hair.
Don’t Dry it Out
Frizzy hair is mainly caused by the loss of moisture in the hair itself. Because the hair is dry it is able to absorb moisture from the environment which causes a kind of swelling in the outer layers of the hair, giving the distinctive frizzy look that we all know and love.
There are some things you can do to give your hair moisture and surprisingly, not washing it is one of them. Washing hair too much can actually dry it out quicker than you can go online and send flowers to Rome, especially if you aren’t using the correct shampoo. Some professionals recommend washing just 2 to 3 times per week with appropriate shampoo for your hair type.
Bring Out Your Dead
Your hair is alive at the root level and down to almost the tip, but the very end of the hair dies and becomes dry and then splits at the ends. This is known as “split ends” and can be the cause of frizzy-looking hair or make frizz problems worse. Luckily, this can be sorted out fairly easily by having your hair regularly cut at a salon.
Leaving split ends can cause the split to travel all the way up the hair resulting in dull and lifeless-looking hair where you might need to cut off more than you should just to restore the hair to its natural shine. Having your hair trimmed by a quarter-inch every 3 months will be enough to remove any split ends and keep your hair looking fresh and vibrant at the tips.
Heat + Frizz = More Frizz
One of the worst culprits for exacerbating frizz is high temperatures from such things as hair dryers, straighteners or curlers. This is because heat removes the natural moisture from your hair so that it is prepared to absorb environmental humidity similar to overwashing. Because of this, care should be taken when using such devices but better models come with good temperature controls so it’s a good idea to invest in a more expensive range rather than bargain-basement tools.
Additionally, heat protection shampoos, sprays and mousses are available such as John Frieda’s “Frizz-Ease” range that can help for situations where using heat just can’t be avoided. Some of these products don’t do much for unmanaged hair though and they can’t provide a magical solution to severely damaged hair.
