On June 21st 2015 it is the Summer Solstice, this day is special in various ways. To most it marks the longest day of the year, now we all know that every day has the same length so what I mean by the longest day is that it has the longest daylight or sunlight hours. It also marks the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere.
When I think of the Summer Solstice I think about the longest day of the year but something else too, for me it marks Midsummer and is a Paganism/Wicca celebration although others do celebrate it too in their own ways.
Solstice or Litha as some call it means stopping or standing still of the sun. The sun is at it’s maximum height of the year.
Many Pagans and non Pagans to travel to ancient religious sites including Stonehenge to see the sun rise. Some hold rituals sometimes even naked. I won’t be able to travel anywhere this year though but whatever I do I won’t be doing it naked!
It is also the time of the first harvest normally and it is celebrated too.
I’m always interested in what others plan to do on the Summer Solstice and there are so many different ways you can make this day. I tend to look at different websites to find more ideas to make it maybe a little more fun for the children and my husband too.
So what will I be doing on the 21st June?
If the weather is nice I will spending as much time outdoors as can, enjoying the beauty of nature, the breeze, the scents and of course the sun.
We will not be having a bonfire as I think they are rather dangerous but maybe a family barbecue, with some music and enjoy spending time with each other.
I will of course light a candle when it starts to get dark as I always do on special days of the year and burn my incense which I bought in a pack of 16 and I will be thanking the Goddess for all that we have. I will probably get up very early to watch the sunrise because if nothing else it is a beautiful sight to see.
If it is raining then I will still be doing the candle, incense and thanking the Goddess once it gets dark but obviously I won’t be spending all day outside, I will get out there at some point in the day though and just wonder in everything around me.
How will you be celebrating the Summer Solstice?
