I was given the opportunity to review some LighterLife FAST 5:2 meals as part of the 5:2 diet plan. I had been researching the 5:2 diet plan as it seemed ideal for me as I do like my food and cutting down the calories just 2 days per week sounded great.
I was sent enough LighterLife FAST meals for 4 weeks and I received a pack of 4 chocolate flavour shakes, 4 banana flavour shakes, 4 vegetable flavour soups, 4 original porridge flavoured meals, 4 pasta carbonara flavoured meals, 4 spaghetti bolognese flavour meals, 4 crispy peanut flavour bars and 4 toffee flavour bars. The idea is to have 4 of any of these a day during the 2 days of fasting. for example – breakfast – porridge, lunch – shake, snack – bar, dinner, spaghetti bolognese. This will add up to around 600 calories a day.
I was very eager to get started and began with my breakfast which was porridge. I do like porridge but usually have to sweeten it a bit, but obviously I couldn’t with this. I usually mix my porridge with water instead of milk and this is mixed with water too although I usually use boiling water and this required cold water and for it to be microwaved.
I did like the taste of this but the texture was like baby food. There was plenty enough in the portion for me and it did keep me going until lunchtime with a few minor tummy grumbles within an hour of lunch. The original porridge flavoured LighterLife FAST meal is 153 calories.
At lunch I decided on the chocolate shake, now I must declare I am not a lover of chocolate shakes at all I would have preferred a strawberry flavour but as this was what I was given and it had to be used I decided to use this up first before I started on the banana shake.
Again this is mixed with water and has to be either mixed with an electric blender, hand whisk or shaking it really well. Ok so it wasn’t the best tasting shake I have had but that is because of the flavour more than anything else. I have had other slimming brand shakes and it tastes very similar to those and I did drink it all as I was hungry at that point and I suspect I would have eaten or drank anything. There are 152 in this.
Snack time I was really looking forward to as the bars on the front of the packet look delicious. I decided to have a toffee flavoured bar and it tasted delicious. I would definitely recommend these. They contain 178 calories.
It was finally dinner time and I decided on the spaghetti bolognese because it looked really nice on the pack shot and I do love spaghetti bolognese.
Again I had to add water to it, as it is a dry mix. I then put it in the microwave for the required time.
I was really disappointed with this. It did not look like the pack when cooked and it must have been the smallest portion I have ever seen. When I tried it I had to stop, it was tasteless and was too much like the spaghetti bolognese you buy in the baby jars. It was also quite powdery tasting. There are 150 calories in this.
My plan is to substitute the spag bol for something of similar calories as there is no way I could eat that again.
For my second fasting day I had banana shake for breakfast which was really nice and very much welcomed after the disaster dinner the previous night. it contains 153 calories.
Lunchtime I decided on the vegetable soup, again you add water to it. I struggled eating this, as I am not a lover of many green foods, but it was a great portion and was 150 calories. I think I will be substituting these for cuppa soups in future with a flavour I know I like.
Snack time I had the crispy peanut bar this was delicious and I really enjoyed it. There are 176 calories in this.
Dinner time was pasta carbonara. Again you have to add water and microwave. It didn’t look as appetising as it did on the pack shot although it was edible and tasted ok. It was a small portion though.
I am not sure on the actual nutrition in these meals as they all seem to be dry meals that you add water to and microwave and I have read so many stories of microwave food not being all that good for you. Although if you are only doing it for 2 days a week for a few weeks I do not think it will do any harm.
After 2 days of the fasting it makes you so grateful to have normal food for the next 5 days but I have started dreading the fasting days now.
After the first week I had lost 3lb.The second week of using the LighterLife FAST meals and substituting the ones I didn’t like with meals of equal calories I lost 2lb and the 3rd week I shed 7lb. but I do not think that was solely because of the fasting as I was ill for 3 of the non fasting days too.
I have not been exercising at all during this time but have been eating smaller portions during the 5 days and more water.
I will be continuing this plan, but as I am doing now as it seems to be working.
