My dogs are both Shih Tzus, they are aged 8 and 5 and are male and female. We had tried many dog food with Gizmo (aged 8) in particular as he has allergies and certain foods make it worse. We feed both dogs the same food as Peppa does not have any problems with allergies. We had to change the dog’s food a lot to find one they both could manage and that would not play up with allergies or delicate tummies and one that would also maintain a healthy weight in both dogs.
This was a struggle, wet food was not an option as it gave Gizmo an upset tummy whenever he had it. Complete dog foods that were less expensive would also play his allergies up because of the amount of food dust in them. We did find a couple that both the dogs liked but Gizmo, as he is older prefers to do as little as possible, gained weight and it was not long before he was a tubby dog whereas Peppa went the other way and lost weight so even though they liked them it was not doing much for their health and I am trying so hard to get them both back to being healthy dogs.
Now I pay more for pet food, they are my fur babies after all and they should have something that will benefit their health and I have found that veterinary formulated foods have done wonders for my dogs. Not only do they both seem to be thriving from it, Peppa has put on weight, Gizmo has lost a little weight, not all of it yet but he is less tubby so I think it is doing its job.
I have never had limited feeding times for the dogs I allow free choice, they have food available at all times but I do feed them the amount my vet suggested per day although they do not usually eat that much. They have never gone into an overeating mode as they know it is there they usually take themselves to the bowl once in the morning and then in the evening.
Since Gizmo has put on weight we are taking both dogs out for walks more too. Only once a day as it does wear them out for the rest of the day but I also make sure we ‘play’ in the garden running around, throwing their toys for them to fetch, so they are getting enough exercise. One of the tip I have learnt from a friend was to use retractable leashes for my untrained poochesso that they are free to explore, move around and lose those extra kilos. I think if Gizmo had his way he would sleep all day but I worry now as he is getting older that the less exercise he gets he will eventually have joint troubles and be stiff from lack of use. We are currently trying out Hill’s Science Plan pet food and so far so good, they are eating it which is always a good start. They have only been eating it for just over a week but I am hoping it will be the last food we have to try with them. I will let you know how the dogs get on with it in a few weeks on the blog.
I almost forgot to mention that the lovely Gemma Carroll illustrated a picture of Peppa for me.
Isn’t it fantastic! She did a really good job as the photo wasn’t that clear to what breed Peppa was and I also sent a photo of the duck and the wall she jumps every day and Gemma has got Peppa down to a tee with this picture. I am totally in love with it.
