We were sent a Gemmies Design Studio which is a new creative brand from Character Options to review and my daughter was so excited about this. She loves to make things and as soon as she saw the things so could make with it she couldn’t wait to get started.
Gemmies is the creative brand where a sparkly 3D world comes to life. This proven creative play pattern takes working with beads and jewels to another level as they hook, loop and create collectable jewelled figures and decorations.
Inside the box was; Design Studio, 369 gems, 40 spacers, 134 gem rings, 8 gem posts, 5 templates, 4 gem containers, 1 light box and a deluxe gem tool.
Once we had taken everything out of the box we realised we needed 2 AAA batteries which are not included for the light box. Luckily we had some to hand and popped those in. Then we put the gems in the drawer which is in the Design Studio, also placing the containers and light box where they were supposed to go.
We chose a template to follow and placed it in the centre of the studio and counted out how many beads we would need and put them in the containers ready.
My daughter wanted to make the ice cream Gemmie and so she studied the template hard before attempting it. To be honest we didn’t really ‘get’ the instructions at all so we looked on the Make Gemmies website as they provide video tutorials which I thought maybe easier for my daughter to follow.
My daughter tried very hard with this, she is 9 years old and found that it was difficult to get the bands onto the gem tool and they kept pinging off her fingers when she tried, so I kept that part topped up for her. The first band she did was good and once she got the hang of it she started doing really well, right up until she had to join the bands together and the gems kept unclipping from the other band and she didn’t have the strength in her fingers to pull the bands open enough to get one gem through two bands. She really struggled.
So far she has only managed to complete the ice cream Gemmie as it was so difficult for her and she had a lot of help with it from me and her older sister. Even we found it quite a struggle. She has said she will carry on trying to make things with it though which is a good thing.
She did like displaying it on the light box as it changes colours making the Gemmies sparkle.
The Gemmies Design Studio is suitable for ages 6 and over although I would have to say it is more suited to older girls, 9 and over. It costs around £29.99 and also in the range is the Gemmies Activity pack (RRP £9.99) which had two themes available at the moment.
