I never thought I would have to take my little man to the hospital, well not until he was a toddler and being a monster jumping off of things etc. and I thought it would be that he would crack his head open and need it glued. Never in a million years did I think his first trip to hospital would be when he was 20 weeks old.
Zander has been grumpy lately with his teeth but no temperature or anything, yesterday he was his normal self although he refused to sleep when it was afternoon nap time so he was more tired than usual.
I got him ready for bed, he was fine, his usual, ‘I’m tired’ grumpiness but that’s normal when he’s not slept. I fed him his bottle and he was falling asleep on it, again that is normal when he is tired, but still drinking a bit every few seconds. When I knew he was not going to drink any more I lifted him up to wind him and he started shaking, his head and arms were going. I called him to see if that would stop it but he was still asleep. It lasted no more than 10-15 seconds but totally scared the life out of me. I started panicking, crying, while Roger rang 111 to see what they thought.
They did an assessment over the phone, which was difficult as they wanted Zander awake but he was just too tired, it took a while to wake him, finally stripping him worked and he was as alert as normal and his normal self again.
They advised that we went to the Dr’s with him immediately just to get him checked over. Luckily the surgery was open until half 6 and we were seen as soon as we walked in.
After checking his heart beat, pulse and being asked loads of different questions the doctor rang the hospital and said we had to take Zander to the Paediatric Assessment Unit for them to assess him too.
So off we drove to the hospital, meanwhile Zander is sleeping peacefully in his car seat as if nothing had happened. Once we got to the hospital and found the PAU we were seen almost straight away, first thing they did was plug his finger into the blood pressure machine, everything fine, temperature fine, weight fine, colour fine. Everything was fine. We were then seen by a nurse who checked into his eyes and listened to his chest. Again all fine. Then the registrar came in and she did the same tests as well as checking reflexes. By this point Zander was very annoyed that they wouldn’t leave him to sleep and was hitting the registrar and trying to roll away, screaming and crying. She said there doesn’t appear to be anything of concern. Explained that it could have been where he had dosed off and lifted that it shocked him, or could just be one of those things. She gave us open access in case it happened again so we could go straight there via ambulance.
We got home just after 9pm, we were all exhausted by this point, Zander went straight to bed and slept right through until 5.30am had a bottle and slept til 9am and he is absolutely fine, his normal chatterbox self.
I am definitely feeling it today though, the worry and everything has completely drained me.
Fingers crossed it doesn’t happen again. It really was the scariest evening of my life.
