Week days are always busy, especially when it is a school day and we have after school activities and looking after a baby as well. Some mid-week days I just need to make something that is quick and easy that the whole family can enjoy. We were chosen to join the Dolmio Bolognese #ThankGoodness challenge in which our goal was to make a simple, good-for-you meal including a jar of Dolmio Bolognese sauce which contains no artificial colours, flavours, preservatives or sweeteners. We were also sent a hamper which contained everything we could need for the meal and for more meals afterwards too.
Our bolognese is probably one that is made by most people. The ingredients for it was;
Dolmio Bolognese Sauce
Cheese or Parmesan to top
We do have a bit of a struggle getting vegetables into the children and with the mushrooms, onions, aubergine, courgettes and the tomatoes from the Dolmio Bolognese sauce we found that they didn’t even notice they were even eating vegetables.
Our method of preparing and cooking this is as follows; boil the mince until brown all the way through. I usually do this for about 30 minutes. During this time slice and dice, onions, mushrooms, courgettes and aubergines and lightly fry them.
Drain the minced beef and then add the lightly fried vegetables and then add the whole jar of Dolmio Bolognese sauce, mix thoroughly and put on the hob and leave to simmer while I put the spaghetti in a pan of boiling water and cook until soft.
Finally I dish up, spaghetti first and the bolognese on top adding grated cheese or Parmesan to the top of the meal. I myself chose the grated cheese topping, my husband and one of my daughters chose the Parmesan.
The whole meal smelt delicious and we couldn’t wait to taste it. It was absolutely lovely, all the flavours from the mushrooms, courgettes, aubergine and onions mixing with the minced beef and Dolmio sauce. Even the children really enjoyed it.
I am very pleased with the result of this and it took about 40 minutes maximum to make.
We did have left overs and so the following day we used the jacket potatoes and used the left over bolognese for the filling, something I had not tried before. Again it was delicious and for someone that usually only has cheese in a jacket potato it has surprised me and I really enjoyed it. It has also made me try something new.
This has been a really good challenge for us as although we do use Dolmio Bolognese sauce when we have a bolognese we do tend to just use the jar with no extra ingredients. I will definitely be making this again.
Did you know that each 500g jar of Dolmio Bolognese Sauce contains: 76% sun ripped diced tomatoes, 11% tomato paste, water, onions, salt, corn flour and other spices, basil and other herbs, garlic and sunflower oil and beet sugar. It also contains 1 of your 5 a day portions of fruit and veg.
