pig-goes-pop-montage-r-hr

My daughter is five and has seen this game advertised on the TV recently so she knew what it was about before receiving it.

We took it out of the box almost as soon as we received it as my daughter was very eager to play it.

We first laid all the burgers with numbers faced down on the table, twisted the pig’s tail to let out the air and then pushed the arms until they clicked agains his sides and closed the coat and fastened his belt.

The dice has 6 sides 4 of the sides have 1 colour on each, 1 side has 4 colours on and the last side has a cross on it. This is what you go by when taking your turn.

sam_4281

As the youngest player goes first this was my daughter she rolled the dice she rolled purple then chose a burger it had the number 4 on the bottom.

She the put the burger into the pigs mouth then pushed his head down 4 times. i then rolled a yellow, picked my burger up and got a 2, pushed the pigs head down once twice…. POP!

I lost :(

We then had another game and again I lost. One more game and I won.

This is a quick and fun game especially designed for the little ones.

When you have finised playing you can store all the contents into the pigs belly as the back comes open. Which means that you shouldn’t loose any of the bits.

Also as it isn’t a very large game you could quicte easily put it in a bag without the box, as once you have read the instructions once you really do not need to read them anymore as it’s a simple game, So it is perfect when travelling on a long journey in the car or going on holiday on a plane, train or for a wet day.

We really liked playing this game and would recommend it to anyone with little ones.

Pig Goes Pop! RRP £19.99 and is available at all good stores that sell games and online too.

Word For Word Game by Gibsons

sam_4233

We were given the game Word for Word to review.
It is for 2-6 players and for ages 8 +

“For those who always have to have the last word!

Whats in the box:
99 wooden lettered tiles
Cloth bag
Egg Timer
Rule sheet

The aim of the game is to score the most points to reach an agreed target.

sam_4234

Myself, my husband and my 14 year old daughter played the game.

First we placed all of the wooden tiles into the cloth bag and shook it.
We then each took a tile and placed it faced up on the table. Whoever had the letter nearest the Z started.
That was my husband. We all then too another 8 tiles from the bag so we now had 9 tiles and placed them faced up in front of ourselves.

My husband as he was the person to start, then had to turn the egg timer over and had 30 seconds to make the longest word he could out of the tiles he had. Once finished he then had to take new tiles out of the bag so he had 9 tiles in front of him again.

The next player, my daughter, had her turn nect, she had to turn the timer over and alter the word in some way, either by rearranging letters ot substituting one letter to make a new work, or adding a letter to make a new work, o add and substitute a letter to make a new word.

If she failed to do any of these in the 30 seconds she then had to sit the rest of that round out.

She didn’t fail and it was then my turn, I did the same as my daughter. This carried on until no players could change that word anymore, The person, who happened to be my husband on this occasion then scored 10 points for every letter that was on the table.

The next round we replaced the unused letters to the baf and shook it again and we each took 9 tiles out again. The winner of the previous round got to make the first word. and so the rounds continued until the first person reached the target which we agreed was 500.

The overall winner was my husband, and didn’t we know it, he thinks he is the smartest now!

This was a fun game, it was tense as knowing you only have a certain amount of time to do anything makes you panic and your mind go blank. We had a blast playing it even though we now have to hear frequently that my husband is the best.

Rapidough Game Review

Pip Pap Pop…Let’s Bubble, Buster

Rapidough by Drumond Park  is an old favourite that has been completely updated.

I am not sure what the older version was like so have nothing to compare the updated version to but I can say it’s a family favourite here already!

The game is for 4 or more players and aged 8 years+ it is best to play in 2 or 3 teams.

What’s in the box:

3 containers of coloured Modelling Dough: Red, Yellow, Blue
3 Modelling Mats
3 Modelling Tools
3 Dough Pligger Tools
400 Word Cards
Instructions.

sam_4232

In each team players get turns to be the Modeller the rest of the team are the guessers.

There are 3 types of cards,

Only One Word – with these cared ALL Modellers model the same word.

Printed With Three Words – With these cards the Modellers can choose the word they feel will be more easy for them. They do not have to tell the other Modellers what word they have chosen and the Modellers can be modelling the same or different words.

Printed With Three Words, Each One On A Different Coloured Background – With these each Modeller must use the word on their teams colour.

Right so let’s begin.

We have two teams of two and we are off.

My team is the Yellow team and My daughters team is the Red team.

Myself and Tiffany are the Modellers the other 2 were the guessers.

My firsy attempt at modelling resulted in a..

sam_4264

Jellyfish!

Ok so spider, octopus, squid and various other things were mentioned while guessing but the guesser did FINALLY get it.

Our Team won so we got to steal a blob of the other teams dough, We used the Dough Plugger and cut the dough out and replaced it back into the pot.

The game carried on for a while with various other words

sam_4268

Nose

sam_4271

Armchair

Eventually my team lost we ran out of dough.

We all found Rapidough a fun game and to be honest who doesn’t like playing with dough?

It got our creative juices flowing and we are going to ask more family to come round to play so we can have three teams and each team will have more guessers.

I am really looking forwards to it!

I would recommend Rapidough to everyone especially if you have family get togethers it’s brilliant!

Rapidough is one of the many fun games from Drumond Park check the site for stockists.

We also have a competition running at the moment to win your very own Rapidough Game

PAIRSinPEARS Game

pairs-in-pears

Pairs in Pears is in word game which is packed away in a pear shaped zipped case, Inside the case are 104 tiles, which are 4 complete alphabets in different pattern, solid, outline, line and dots, a reusable score board and instructions with how to play Pairs in Pears and PairPoints plus educational exercises too. Pairs In Pears is suitable for age 5+ and for 2-4 players.

The aim of the game is to race to make paires connecting words in matching patterns.
I played this with my recently turned 5 year old daughter.

First all of the tiles we placed in the centre of the table and faced down. Then we each took 52 tiles as there was just my daughter and myself playing.

The winner is the first to make 4 pairs of words.

As there are a lot less vowels in the alphabet than consonants , two words could share the same vow. going horizontally and vertically.
Once we took our 52 tiles, which my daughter wanted to count out. She then shouted “GO” and we both turned over our tiles and then tried to make pairs out of the words with the matching patterns.

Each word had to have at least 3 letters which I let my daughter choose just 3 letter words as that was easier for her so I did the same to make if fairer on her.

When one of the players finish making their four pairs that person shouts out “PAIRS” and wins the game.

This was me the first time and then I let my daughter win the next game as I’m a nice mum and as shes only little I have a huge advantage against her.

My daughter really loved playing Pairs for Pears and I think it helps her educationally as she can learn new words too.

win230348tn

Another thing I liked about the game is it had no board and being all tucked away into a little case it is easy to put in my bag and take it with us, incase the there is a time when the children get bored.

Appletters

01_1

Appletters comes in a case that looks like a red apple, Inside is 144 A-Z letter tiles which are in a bag of their own and instructions.
We played Appletters, Just myself and my 5 year old daughter (Daddy helped her).
We first turned all of the tiles over so the letters were not showing in the centre of the table this is called the “Core”.

Next we both picked a tile. The person with with letter closest to A goes first. That was me.

We then picked 8 tiles from the core and stood them up so that the other player couldn’t see what we had.
I then had to take my turn and place a word into the middle of the table. Once I had done that it was my daughters turn to make a word using either the first or last letter of the word previously place down.

medscaleappletters

This in turn leads to the tiles looking like a snake pattern when more added to it as they can be added both vertically and horizontally reading top to bottom or left to right but, the words being laid down must remain one tile wide so not like a normal crossword.
When I had ran out of words to make I had to say “Pick and Pass” and pick 3 tiles from the “Core” and then my daughter had to take her turn.

The game continued like this until one of us had used up all of our letters which makes that person the winner and they have to say “How Do You Like Them Apples!”

However if the game ends with the players still having letters but unable to use them then the winner is the person with the least amount of letters left.

I lost I think mainly because daddy was helping my daughter.
It was a fun game although my daughter has only recently turned 5 I think it was a bit too hard for her to play as an individual. I would have said it would better suit 6-7 years up.

On the instructions there are another 2 games you can play with the same tiles called Apple Turnover and AppleScore. We haven’t tried them yet though but its good that there are different ways to play as that adds a bit of variety if people get bored with the same old game.

Stained by Ella James

stained

Title: Stained
Author: Ella James
Genre: YA
Format: Kindle
Star Rating: 4 Stars – Loved It

Synopsis:
After a fire destroys seventeen-year-old Julia’s home and kills her foster parents, she chases the half-demon responsible across the country and back, determined to avenge her family and discover why a host of celestial baddies want her dead. With Julia is enigmatic hottie Cayne, who has his own score to settle with the half-demon, and who might be just as dangerous as the creature he and Julia hunt.

Review:

I read Stained in record time, It was a fantastic book from the very beginning. The story didn’t linger for pages on end before anything good happened, like some books do, this one had the good stuff happening from the very start.

I loved Julia’s character and how her and Cayne’s friendship develops through the book into a romance.
I was totally involved in the book from the start, hence why I read it in record time!

With the fantasy element of half-demons it just got better the more I read. The thoughts of fear, hope, dread, happiness and of course sadness were always there throughout.

I loved how my imagination could really flow the scenery was describes impeccably, as was Julia and Cayne and the half demon, down to the colour of his feathers.

When I got to the end of the last page I was left saying “NOOOOO she can’t leave it like that!”
Which is good because you are left wanting more and I cannot wait until the second book Stolen in the Stained series is available.

I have given Stained 4 stars and would definitely recommend this to YA, Fantasy, Romance fans

You can purchase Stained By Ella James from both Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com

Bananagrams Game

sam_4064

We were kindly given the game Bananagrams to review.
The game consists of a case like a pencil case that looks like a banana.

When opening the case inside there are 144 lettered tiles in a bag and instructions.
On the instruction page there are alternative suggestions to play the game Best Of…, Banana Smoothie, Banana Café and Banana Solitaire as well as the original game.

When we had a spare hour or so myself, my husband and my eldest daughter decided to get this out and try it.
First we had to make sure we had enough space to play and decided the dining table would be the best option for this.
We got all the tiles out of the bag and faced them down on the table, They were called the “Bunch” Then the fun began…
With 3 of us playing ages we got to pick 21 letters from the “Bunch”.
My husband then said “Split” and we could reveal our tiles and start to make our own little crosswords.

 sam_4063

Simple! well not really simple as if you run out of letters you say “Peel” and take a tile from the “Bunch”, but all other players have to take a tile too. So you have almost finished and get the worst letter possible so then have to changed your crossword to fit this one particular letter in somewhere. If the letter just isn’t working anywhere in your crossword then you can say “Dump” which you replace your bad letter into the “Bunch” and collect 3 letters in return. This only effects the person that dumps the letter though.

So there we are racing to win, we are quite competitive so that made it all the more fun.
My husbands letters were much to be desired, think ‘Typical Bloke words’ and you get the idea. Where as myself and my daughter used clean words.

The game ends when all the letters from the “Bunch” have been used and the first person to use all their letters. This player then called out “Bananas” and wins the hand but only if the words are acceptable in the dictionary if not then that player becomes a “Rotten Banana” and is out and all their tiles are returned to the “Bunch” and the game resumes until one of the other players win.

This was a great game, we were able to use our brains and think about what we were doing rather other mundane games I have played in the past.

bananagrams-game

The game lasts around half an hour with three of us playing but with more players it would last a little less as they would have less letters to start with and less in the “Bunch”.

Another great thing about Bananagrams is that as it doesn’t have a board to play on I can pop it in my bag and take it with me when visiting friends and family so if we get bored we can have a quick game.

I would highly recommend this game, It’s fun, portable and no big boxes to store either.

Bananagrams RRP is £14.99 available from Amazon.co.ukPlay.comTesco.com, John Lewis and all good stores.

5 Second Rule Board Game

sam_36185 Second Rule Board Game – The Game of Quick Thinking and Fast Talking!

What’s in the box?
376 Question Cards (752 questions)
12 PASS ON Cards
12 SWITCH Cards
6 Playing Pawns
1 Playing Board
1 Spiral Timer
1 Set of Rules.

We set the board game up, The board has a large 5 on it, you have playing pawns of different for each person, there are SWITCH and PASS ON cards as well as the question cards and a spiral timer.sam_3638

Basically on your turn you have 5 seconds to name 3 things, if the players doesn’t get them all then it’s passed on to the next person who can answer but not use any of the answers that were given by the previous person.
Well this was harder than I had expected it to be, with me being so brainy and that! Five seconds isn’t long and I really don’t think my brain engages very well in a short time.

Giving one answer is fine but three, I struggled. So what I thought would be a very quick game between myself, Rog and Tiff ended up taking about an hour.

Roger won, he was very quick indeed with his answers. Myself and Tiff carried on until one of us had reached the finish too. We weren’t very good so it took ages.

This is a great game to get out at a family get together at home, especially Christmas evening or Boxing day, but on other occasions too.

It is funny watching everyone struggling to get there words out, We were almost rolling around laughing at one point. Its like you just go completely numb.

It’s great fun for all the family and would definitely recommend it.

5 Second Rule is for 3 to 6 players and for Ages 8 to Adult and costs from £14 aavailable from Amazon.co.uk Play.com, Tesco, Argos and all good toy shops.

aw11211-4607tps1057248

5 Second Rule
It should be easy to name 3 breeds of dog – but can you do it under the pressure of 5 seconds twisting down and with the other players staring, waitingfor you to get flustered? Time is not on your side, So just say what comes to mind and risk ridiculous answers slipping out as time twirls down on the spiral timer.
There are opportunities to ‘duck’ the question or inflict ‘pain’ on your opponents by use of the SWITCH or PASS ON cards.
It’s all in good fun as players seek to reach the finish first in this fast-paced, frenzied and fun family game!
